Congratulations!
-->

Hyundai Motors and AsiaHaptics 2018 are pleased to announce the 1st Student Challenge in Automotive Haptics. In this challenge, we invite teams of undergraduate and graduate students from all over the world to propose and create innovative haptics solutions for the next generation vehicles. We particularly seek high-quality automotive haptics solutions (hardware and software) that can be applied to vehicles and vehicular technology including but not limited to in-car entertainment, driving technology, smart cars, vehicle sensors, and autonomous driving. Please note that there are no restrictions on proposal topics as long as they can be applied to vehicles (mid-air haptics, touchscreen haptics, fingertip haptics, etc). However, the proposal should contain solid and concrete ideas and the participants must demonstrate their skill set for actual implementation of their prototype. A total of five to ten teams will be selected for the second round based on the quality and feasibility of their proposals. All selected teams will receive the initial grant to cover material expenses for building the prototype of what they proposed. They will compete for $5,000 in cash prizes in AsiaHaptics 2018.

How to Participate?

Reviewing Criteria

Awards

Topics in Mid-Air Haptics (supported by Ultrahaptics) – new

Timeline

FAQ

How to Participate?

A team must complete both the proposal (download) and the participation agreement (download) and submit them by May 27, 2018 (11:59PM UTC) to here. Only PDF files of both proposal and participation agreement are allowed for the submission. No late submissions are accepted. The proposal should be completed in English only.
A team must be formed between 2 to 5 student members, and one advisor must be included in the team. The advisor should serve as a mentor who is willing to spend his/her time and be an expert in guiding the participation in this challenge such as professors, researchers, and engineers. All student team members should be students (all stages of their university careers, from undergraduate to graduate) at the time of submitting the proposal, and the work must be done by the students only. A student member is allowed to participate only up to one team. However, the same advisor can participate up to three teams. At least one student member of each team must attend the full conference to present the team’s work, and will be responsible for conference registration fees and travels. However, we may have limited funds to support students to travel. We will announce it when the funds are available.

Please note that proposals from non-academic participants are highly welcome to participate this competition. However, those who apply to a non-academic track will go through separate reviewing process, and thus awards will be different. We will further notify this once we receive the proposals. After reviewing the proposals, we will select a number of teams (5 to 10) for the next round. Accepted teams will receive an initial grant (up to $1,500) to build a prototype of their proposed automotive haptics solution. Two progress reports on their prototype are required to submit before AsiaHaptics 2018 (see Timeline for deadlines).

Accepted teams will be expected to attend AsiaHaptics 2018 to give a live demo presentation of their work, and discuss their proposed solution with a panel of Student Competition Judges with possible oral presentations at AsiaHaptics. Students are invited to explore the uses of this new technology, and propose novel mid-air haptic environments and applications for the next generation of vehicles. If your team is interested in proposing a topic on mid-air haptics, please read the following carefully and explicitly state that the proposing solution will use UHDK5 in the proposal.

The UHDK5 supports “Amplitude Modulation (AM)” API and can produce mid-air haptics with up to 4 simultaneous control points of about 8mm in diameter each and at a range of 50 cm from the device. The positions of these can be dynamically updated in 3D space and real-time at a rate of up to 400 times a second to form simple geometrical shapes (lines and circles), or modulated over time to give the sensation of tapping, slider-bars, or button clicking. The SDK contains a full API and suite of example code (C++) for you to work through to create your own applications. Ultrahaptics also provides C# libraries for integration within the Unity Game Development platform.

The Ultrahaptics TOUCH Development Kit (UHDK5) contains:

The development kit hardware: a 192 (14×14) transducer array and control board, mounted in a cradle with a Leap Motion Controller device.

Multi-regional power supply, USB cables and compliance, warranty and health and safety booklet.

Detailed information about the Ultrahaptics TOUCH Development Kit (UHDK5) and the SDK is available here:

https://www.ultrahaptics.com/products/touch-development-kit/

https://developer.ultrahaptics.com/faq/sdk/

Timeline

Call for Participation: February, 2018

Proposal submission deadline: <s>April 30, 2018</s> <del>May 14, 2018</del> May 27, 2018(11:59PM UTC)

Notification: <s>May 31, 2018</s> June 8, 2018

1st progress report: <del>July 31, 2018</del> August 20, 2018(11:59PM UTC)

2nd progress report (video required): <del>October 10, 2018</del> October 25, 2018 (11:59PM UTC)

Competition: November 14~16, 2018

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Should I include an advisor?
A. Yes. An advisor is mandatory.

Q. Who owns intellectual property?
A. A team who proposed a project will own the IP. Hyundai Motors will have the right of the first negotiation to obtain an exclusive license.

Q. Total amount in my budget plan exceeds an initial grant ($1,500). What should I do?
A. We will evaluate the proposal including the budget plan to see if the list of materials are appropriate to develop a prototype. If the amount in budget plan exceeds the initial grant, we may consider an extra grant.

Q. I am a post-doc. Can I apply?
A. Unfortunately, no. We consider students as all stages of their university careers, from undergraduate to graduate only.

Q. Can I publish a paper based on the proposal?
A. Yes.

Q. Can I write a proposal in my home language other than English?
A. No. The proposal should be completed in English only.

Q. In a proposal, can you clarify section 6 regarding intellectual property?
A. What we are actually looking for is that your idea is original and does not infringe patent rights of others. If there exist(s) similar patents, you may want to argue that your idea is different and you can avoid the infringement by implementing yours differently. This is the strategy part.

Q. How do I write a statement of contributions.
A. You need to write a statement that states how your idea contributes to car industries, haptics communities, human lifestyle, etc.

For more information, please contact competition2018@asiahaptics.org.

Student Challenge in Automotive Haptics Date/Time: November 15, Thursday / 10:00-12:00 Venue: Room 110-111, Songdo Convensia In this challenge, undergraduate and graduate students from all over the world to propose and create innovative haptics solutions for the next generation vehicles.
